¿De donde eres?

Vivo en Montreal, pero originalmente soy de un pequeño pueblo en British Columbia, Canada. Mis padres son ambos Griegos entonces me hace primera generación Griega – Canadiense.

¿De donde viene el nombre “The Besnard Lakes” ?

Es un lugar lejos y desolado de cualquier ciudad grande. Es la personificación del bosque prístino Canadiense, donde hay tranquilidad y la naturaleza puede ser dejada en paz.

¿Cuantos son en la banda y que instrumentos están involucrados?

Somos cuatro: Richard White en la guitarra eléctrica / segunda voz. Kevin Laing en la bateria / percusiones / teclados / segunda voz. Jace Lasek en las guitarras eléctrica y de doce cuerdas / mellotron / primera y segunda voz. Olga Goreas en el bajo / flauta / primera y segunda voz.

¿Quienes son tu influencias?

Hay muchas influencias. Me encanta lo Britanico Clasico, el rock y pop Americano de los 60’s y 70’s, como los Beatles, Bee-Gees, Beach Boys (las bandas con B’s), Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Yes. También pase por un periodo influenciada por la música de los 80’s con bandas como Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine y Swervedriver estaban emergiendo. Tengo  mucha admiracion por  Kim Deal de los Pixies y Kim Gordon de  Sonic Youth. Literalmente aprendi  a tocar el bajo escuchando y tocando canciones de los Pixies y realmente me fascina la voz de Kim Deal. Me encanta la originalidad inimitable de Kim Gordon, su estilo y letras son tan buenas.

¿Cuantos albums tienes?

Nunca los he contado pero deben de ser aproximadamente 800 discos. 

¿Cual es tu estilo musical?

Soy bastante autodidacta y toco por oído. Probablemente nunca ire a una escuela de musica aunque me gustaria tomar clases de canto algún día.

¿ Has escuchado bandas mexicanas?

No recientemente, necesito una refrescada de memoria y unas sugerencias.

¿Disquera o internet?

Que tal las dos.

¿Que tienes en tu playlist?

Dejame checar… Ahorita tengo “Destination Unknown” por los  Missing Persons. Esta pegajosa – pegajosa rica, no pegajosa chafa.

¿Cual es el festival en que mas te gustaría estar?

Me encantan los festivales, entonces me gustaría tocar en todos.

The Besnard Lakes – Interview with Olga Goreas

Where are you from?

II live in Montreal, but am originally from a small town in British Columbia, Canada.  My parents are both Greek so that makes me a first generation Greek-Canadian.  So I’m kind of from all over the place!

Where does “The Besnard Lakes” name come from?

It’s a place far away and quite isolated from any major cities. It’s the epitome of a pristine Canadian wilderness where it’s peaceful and nature can be left alone.

How many musicians play in the band and what are the instruments involved?

There are four of us:  Richard White on electric guitar/backing vocals, Kevin Laing on drums/percussion/keyboard/backing vocals, Jace Lasek on electric and 12-string electric guitar/mellotron/lead and backing vocals, and Olga Goreas on bass/flute/lead and backing vocals.

Who are your influences?

There are lots of different influences.  I love classic British and American rock and pop from the 60’s and 70’s – The Beatles, Bee-Gees, Beach Boys (The B Bands!), Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Kinks, Yes.  I also went through a very influential period of music in the mid to late 80’s when bands such as Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver were emerging.  Kim Deal of the Pixies and Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth I both admire greatly – I literally learned how to play bass by listening and playing along to Pixies’ songs, and I really love Kim Deal’s voice.  Kim Gordon I love for her originality – she really has an inimitable style and her lyrics are so great.  

How many albums do you have?

I haven’t counted them but I’m guessing approximately 800 records.  

What is your music style?

I’m pretty much self-taught and I play by ear. I’ll probably not go to music school although I’d like to take vocal lessons at some point.

Have you listened to any mexican bands?

Not recently –  I need to have my memory refreshed and I need some recommendations!

What is on your playlist?

Let me check… Right now it’s “Destination Unknown” by Missing Persons.  It’s a really catchy song – and it’s good catchy, not shit catchy. 

What is the music festival that you would most like to play in?

I I love all festivals, so I’d love to play them all!
