¿Donde y cuando nace Brumelia?
En Noviembre del 2009. Yo soy de Cuernavaca pero vivo en el D.F., así que nace en las dos ciudades, sin embargo toma la esencia de todo México.

¿Cual es la filosofia de la marca?
Brumelia trata de preservar las costumbres Mexicanas que han trascendido generación tras generación. Los bordados y la cosmovisión, debido a la globalización, son técnicas que se están perdiendo. Cada vez mas mujeres dejan de utilizar los trajes típicos por temor a la burla y dejan de aprender las antiguas tradiciones porque necesitan trabajar de algo que les permita hacer mas dinero. Así que mi motivación es que no solo no se pierdan estas tradiciones sino que evolucionen y formen parte del diseño actual.

¿Cuales son las telas que utilizas?
Hasta ahora solo utilizo loneta 100% algodón, que se asemejan a los textiles tejidos en telar. Las bolsas llevan asas y algunas partes de piel.

¿Que importancia tiene el trabajo de los indígenas mexicanos?
En mi opinión esa es la esencia de nuestra cultura. Parte de nosotros proviene de todos estos relatos que se comunican por medio del trabajo artesanal. Hoy en dia todos queremos vestir igual, todos queremos el mismo cuerpo y lo único que puede diferenciarnos son nuestras raíces.

¿Cada cuanto presentas colección?
Solo llevo una y estoy por sacar la segunda.

¿Como trabajas los bordados?
Las bolsas llevan primero un trabajo de impresión, después de este proceso las mujeres indígenas se llevan las piezas y las bordan, con libertad a que me propongan diseños de bordado sobre los diseños estampados.

¿En donde encontramos las bolsas?
Por ahora solo las vendo en México pero espero que pronto se puedan exportar!

¿Que detalle es indispensable en Brumelia?
Los pompones que le cuelgan a la bolsas, son como flores hechas a mano.

¿Piensas que Brumelia tiene mas aceptación nacional o internacional
Creo que aquí han tenido muy buena aceptación, porque no había surgido la oportunidad de llevarlas al extranjero, pero ahora irán a una expo en Washington y espero que surja algo ahí. Sin embargo pienso que se podrían mover muy bien en otros países, ya que a veces los extranjeros aprecian mucho mas las artesanías, pues las ven como algo exótico y ajeno a lo que viven a diario.

¿Que opinas del diseño en Mexico?
Pienso que va creciendo, cada vez hay mas diseñadores, mas marcas, y mas estilos. Lo importante es que mas gente se anime a hacer lo que le guste, con buena calidad y sobre todo con identidad propia.

¿Cual es tu sueño?
Mi sueño es que la marca crezca, que pueda formar una escuelita o asociación civil para trabajar con mas mujeres, sobre todo que la artesanía logre tener mas valor para el diseño y para la gente.

¿En que te inspiras?
En México, puedo pasar horas en los mercados de la ciudad. Hay tanto por ver!!!

¿Un diseñador que admires?
Miu Miu es de mis marcas favoritas, logra fusionar lo sexy con un toque infantil.

When and where was Brumelia born?
In Novmeber 2009. I am from Cuernavaca, but I live in Mexico City so Brumelia was born in these two places; however its essence is from all of Mexico.

What is your brand philosophy?
Brumelia tries to keep the Mexican traditional customs which have transcended generation after generation. The embroidery and cosmovision, due to globalization, are techniques that are disappearing. Everyday more and more women are not wearing their typical garments in fear of being ridiculed. They stop learning these traditions because they need to survive by working on things that make them more money, so my motivation is not only that these techniques aren’t lost, but that they form part of contemporary design.

Which fabrics do you use?
Until now, I only use cloth that is 100% cotton that is reminiscent of the traditional woven textiles. The purses have handles and leather parts.

How important is the mexican indigenous craft?
In my opinion it is the essence of our culture. Part of us comes from all these stories that communicate by way of arts and crafts. Nowadays we all want to dress alike, have the same body and the only thing that differentiates us is our roots.

How often do you present your collections?
This is my first one and I am working on the second one.

How do you work the embroidery?
The purses first are imprinted, then the indigenous women take the piece and embroider them freely using their own designs.

Where can we find the purses?
Right now just in Mexico, but I hope that soon they can be exported everywhere.

What is an indispensable detail in Brumelia?
The pompons that hang from the purses are like handmade flowers.

Do you think Brumelia is more accepted nationally or internationally?
I think that here Brumelia is well accepted because an opportunity to export them hasn’t arisen, but now I am sending them to an Expo in Washington and I hope something good happens. However; I believe that this kind of product can sell very well in other countries because they appreciate indigenous crafts more because they see it as exotic and different.

What is your opinion of Mexican design?
I believe it is growing daily and there are more designers, brands and styles. More importantly, is that people take risks and create what they like, with high quality and a personal identity.

What is your dream?
My dream is to grow my brand to form a little school and/or foundation to work with other women, but most importantly that these crafts add more creative value to design and to the people.

What inspires you?
I can spend hours in Mexican markets. There are so many things to see.

One designer that you admire?
Miu Miu is one of my favorite brands because he can fuse the sexy side with the childlike.
